| province | any one of the large parts that some countries are divided into |
| territory | one of the parts of the United States that is not a state |
| contiguous | being in actual contact; touching along a boundary or at a point |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas |
| archipelago | an expanse of water with many scattered islands |
| industrial | of or relating to factories, the people who work in factories, or the things made in factories |
| plateau | a large flat area of land that is higher than other areas of land that surround it |
| mineral | a substance (such as quartz, coal, petroleum, salt, etc.) that is naturally formed under the ground |
| immigrant | a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence |
| bilingual | using or able to use two languages especially with equal fluency |
| urbanization | the process by which towns and cities are formed and become larger as more and more people begin living and working in central areas |
| llanos | an open grassy plain in Spanish America or the southwestern U.S. |
| pampas | wide treeless plains of South America |
| pidgin language | language formed by combining several different languages |
| prairie | land in or predominantly in grass |
| tributary | a stream feeding into a larger stream or a lake |
| scarcity | a very small supply |
| antilles | a chain of islands in the West Indies |
| landlocked | enclosed or nearly enclosed by land |
| peninsula | a body of land almost entirely surrounded by water |
