What factors led to the annexation of Hawaii in 1898? William McKinely became president, and favored annexation, unlike Grover Cleveland.
How was American foreign policy in the late 19th century similar to the earlier idea Manifest Destiny? Both called for annexation of new territory.
Why did Jose Marti encourage Cuban rebels to destroy sugar mills and plantations? Marti counted on provoking American intervention to help the rebels.
What events increased the tension between the U.S. and Spain? Spanish concentration camps in Cuba, the De Lome Letter,U.S.S Maine explodes.
How did the Spanish try to avoid war with the U.S.? The Spanish agreed to almost everything the U.S. demanded, including a 6 month cease fire.
What were the terms of the Treaty of Paris? Spain freed Cuba, and turned over the islands of Guam, Puerto Rico, and they sold the Philippines for 20 million to the U.S.
Why was Puerto Rico important to the U.S? Helped maintain U.S. presence in the Caribbean, and protect the future Panama Canal.
What were the aims of the Filipinos? of the Americans? Filipinos: End American occupation.Americans: End the revolt.
Why did Secretary of State John Hay issue the policy statements known as the Open Door notes? The U.S. was beginning to fear that China would be carved into colonies, and American traders would be shut out.
One factor that influenced U.S. citizens to side with the rebels in Cuba was... Support for Cuba's freedom from Spain.
