| pious | Having or showing reverence for god; religious. When Mr. Lapham has the apprentices read from the bible he is being pious. |
| respouse | Raised in relief by hammering on the reverse side of thin metal. After you hit on side you respouse the other. |
| poultice | A soft, moist mass of mustard, herbs, etc. applied to the body as a medicine. Mrs. Lapham put poultice on Johnny's burnt hand to heal it. |
| illiterate | Unable to read and write; showing a lack of education. Besides Johnny all of the other apprentices were illiterate. |
| indolent | Disliking work; lazy; idle. Dove and Dusty were indolent when Johnny told them to do something. |
| diffident | Lacking in self-confidence, shy. Cilla is indifferent and thinks she cant to do anything beyond being a wife. |
| assauge | Calm or soothe; make less intense; make easier or midler. Right when Johnny burnt his hand it was assauge because he looked in no pain. |
| nonchalance | Cool unconcern; indifferent. His nonchalance was rude to his master. |
| effigy | An image or statue usually a person; images burned or hanged to show dislike or contempt. Some people use effigy to release their anger. |
| enigmatic | Like a riddle, baffling, puzzling. |
