| sustainability | an approach to using resources and developing the environment |
| pollution | the introduction of any harmful substance or form of energy into the environment at a faster rate than it can be cleansed |
| deforestation | the large-scale clearing of trees by humans who use the cleared land for growing crops or grazing livestock |
| desertification | dry or semiarid regions become dryer and less productive |
| environment | physical surroundings in which plants, animals, and humans live |
| natural resources | materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain |
| raw materials | resources that can be manufactured, processed, or combined to create a new and useful product. |
| climate | the average weather for long periods of time and in a specific region |
| irrigation | the artificial application of water to land making agriculture possible |
| desalination | a process through which water from oceans is turned into fresh water by removing the salt from it |
| reservoir | an artificial lake where water is kept and stored so that it can be used when needed |
| nuclear power | the energy that is produced when the nucleus of an atom is split apart or when several nuclei are joined together |
