When was the North Start first published? The North Star was first published in 1847.
Who was Charlotta Bass? Charlotta Bass was the editor of the California Eagle.
When did the California Eagle cease publication? The California Eagle ceased publication in 1964.
Who was Robert Abbott? Robert Abbott was the founder, publisher, and editor of the Chicago Defender.
Why was the Chicago Defender unique? It was the only Black newspaper published in the north that also had a circulation in the south.
What did the Chicago Defender do that no other Black newspaper had done? The Chicago Defender encouraged Black to move from the south to the north because of economic advantages resulting from WWI.
What were the economic advantages that were available to Blacks in the north, particularly Chicago? There were jobs in the factories. In Chicago there were jobs in the steel mills and meat packing houses.
What event caused these economic opportunities? World War I.
How long was Freedom's Journal published? Two years
Who was the editor of the Memphis Free Speech? Ida B. Wells.
What was Ida B. Wells known for? She was known for her investigative reporting on lynchings in the south.
Who was Robert Vann? Robert Vann was the editor of the Pittsburgh Courier.
Why was Robert Vann given a cabinet post as Asst. Attorney General to President F.D. Roosevelt? Because he convinced Blacks to switch their allegiance from the Republican to the Democratic Party.
Why was it important for Blacks to vote Democratic in the presidential election of 1932? Because F.D. Roosevelt was a Democrat and he needed the Black vote in order to win the presidential election.
Whose idea was the Double "V" campaign? The campaign was the idea of James Thompson, a cafeteria worker.
What did the double "V" stand for? It stood for victory against the enemy the United States was fighting against in World War I as well as victory for Blacks against racism and second class citizen ship at home in America.
Which newspaper did James Thompson write a letter to suggesting the idea of the Double "V" campaign? The Pittsburgh Courier
