| Popular Sovereignty | Allowing people to decide issues for themselves |
| Compromise | Agreement designed to relieve tensions caused by the expansion of slavery into western territories |
| Martyr | Person who dies for a cause |
| Sectionalism | An exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of the country |
| Secession | To withdraw formally from membership in a group or organization |
| Border Ruffians | People that "ruffled" up African Americans as they came into Kansas because they wanted it to be a slave state |
| Abolitionist | People who were against slavery |
| Manifest Destiny | Argument that it was the God's plan for the United States to expand across North America |
