colony | a territory settled and controlled by a more powerful country |
Joint-Stock Company | a company in which investors buy stock in the company in return for a share of future profits |
charter | a document given to allow the holder to organize settlements in an area |
Democracy | a form of government characterized by free and open election of representatives who are responsive to the will of the people |
discrimination | unfair treatment of a group because of their race, religion, ethnic background, place of birth, or gender |
Jamestown | 1609 first permanent settlement in the English colonies |
dissent | to disagree with or be in opposition to an opinion |
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut | first written constitution in the English colonies |
House of Burgesses | legislative body of the Virginia colonies; first elected representative legislature in the English colonies |
indentured servants | a laborer who agreed to work without pay for 5 - 7 years in exchange for passage money to America |
James Oglethorpe | proprietor who was given the colony of Georgia and he populated it with debtors in English colonies |
Jamestown | 1607 first permanent settlement in the English colonies in Virginia |
Lord Baltimore | proprietor who was given the colony of Maryland which he made into a safe haven for Roman Catholics |
