The Cold War, 1945 - 89

TermDefinition
Iron Curtain a term used to describe the division line between the Western European democracies and the Eastern European communist countries
Satellite States communist states in Eastern Europe that were loyal to the Soviet Union
Containment the policy followed by President Truman in not allowing the spread of communism
Peaceful co-existence a policy developed by Khrushchev to enable capitalism and communism to exist side by side peacefully in the world
Detente an easing of tensions between the Cold War superpowers
Glasnost a policy of openness introduced by Gorbachev which allowed people to criticise the communist system
Perestoika a policy introduced by Gorbachev aimed at rebuilding the economy of the Soviet Union
