Cold War Vocab Test

TermDefinition
Red Scare The rounding up and deportation of several hundred immigrants of radical political views by the federal government in 1919 and 1920. This “scare” was caused by fears of subversion by communists in the United States after the Russian Revolution.
Berlin Wall A wall that separated West Berlin, Germany, from East Germany, which surrounded it until 1989.
Cuban Missile Crisis A confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1962 over the presence of missile sites in Cuba; one of the “hottest” periods of the cold war.
Korean War A war, also called the Korean conflict, fought in the early 1950s between the United Nations, supported by the United States, and the communist Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The war began in 1950.
Vietnam War It was a Cold War conflict pitting the U.S. and the remnants of the French colonial government in South Vietnam against the indigenous but communist Vietnamese independence movement, the Viet Minh, following the latter's expulsion of the French in 1954.
Arms Race A competition between nations for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons, especially between the US and the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Chinese Civil War It was a war fought between the Kuomintang (KMT)-led government of the Republic of China and the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Bay of Pigs scene of an unsuccessful invasion of Cuba by US-backed troops on April 17, 1961.
Communism A political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
Joseph Stalin A Russian leader who succeeded Lenin as head of the Communist Party and created a totalitarian state by purging all opposition
Mao Zedong A Chinese Communist leader and theorist. A founder of the Chinese Communist Party (1921), he commanded troops in the Chinese Civil War (1927-1949) and proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Fidel Castro A Cuban revolutionary and statesman: led the communist overthrow of the Batista dictatorship in 1959; prime minister (1959–76), president (1976–2008)
