Who was involved in the French & Indian War? British vs. French and Indians
What other name is given to the French & Indian War? Seven Year War
What was the war over? French and British believed the Ohio Valley belonged to them because of early exploration and settlement.
What did the first French troops do? They drove out the British that had settled in the Ohio Valley and began to build forts on the the border to protect their claims.
What did George Washington do for the British? He was a messenger, bringing a decree that the French should leave the Ohio Valley. Later, he was sent with troops to attack the French.
What happened to the first British fort? The French attacked and destroyed the fort before it was finished. They then built a bigger fort, Fort Duquesne.
What was Fort Necessity? The makeshift fort built by George Washington for protection for his troops against the French.
What was the start of the French and Indian War? When Fort Necessity was attacked by the French. George Washington surrendered to the French.
At first, who was winning the war? French because the British were not prepared for the "sneak attack" fighting that was used by the French and Indians.
How did the British change the war? They expanded the war to Europe making the French weaker so they would have to send troops from America to fight in Europe.
Where was the final battle of the war located? the British defeated the French in Quebec, Canada
How did the French and Indian war end? The signing of the Treaty of Paris
What is a treaty? A written aggrement between warring parties to end the war.
Was the Treaty of Paris an end to fighting in America? No, the Indians, led by Chief Pontiac, were not happy with the settlers on their lands so they attacked British forts.
What did the Proclamation of 1763 do? King George III gave lands west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Indians to stop the fighting.
Did the Proclamation of 1763 bring peace in America? No, the colonists were mad because they were forced off lands they had settled and weren't allowed to move west of the Appalachian Mountains; they couldn't move freely in America.
Describe America pre war Spain claimed Florida and parts of the southwest; British claimed land along the Atlantic coast; French claimed lands west of the British lands and parts of Canada; Unclaimed land between French and British called the Ohio Valley
