Supreme Court

QuestionAnswer
Who has power to create federal courts that are below the Supreme Court? Congress or judicial power.
What is "original jurisdiction"? The Supreme Court is the first and only court to hear a case.
What is "appellate jurisdiction"? The court has authority to review the decisions of lower courts.
What is Write of Certiorari? A request that the Supreme Court orders a lower court to send up the record of the case review. They grant it by the entire court.
Who is current Chief Justice? John Roberts
Who has been on the court longest? & what year did he take the seat? John Joy, took the seat in 1794
Who is newest to the court? & what year did he join ? Ketanji Brown Jackson, took seat in 2022
How does Supreme Court decide what cases to hear? Cases that decide an issue in their favorite area of law, or if they disagree with a lower court case they can hear a case to correct the lower court.
