Who is Fulgencio Batista? The ruler of Cuba who was elected as president in the 1950s, then later made himself a dictator
Who is Fidel Castro? A weak ruler who overthrow Batista in 1959. Also who created the only communist country in the western hemisphere
What was the Cold War? Conflict between the world's western capitalist democracies and eastern European communist countries from the end of WWII through 1991
Define Communism An economic system wherein private ownership is largely forbidden and all industries and resources are under the control of the state
Define Coup The act of overthrowing an existing governing authority
What is the Cuban Missile Crisis? 1962 Cold War event where the Soviet Union placed ballistic missile sites on the island of Cuba
Define Embargo Trade barrier where all trade is stopped due to political reasons
Who is John F. Kennedy? President of the U.S. at the time of Cuban Missile Crisis
Who is Nikita Khrushchev? Leader of Soviet Union at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis
What is the Soviet Union? Former communist government of Russia during the Cold War
Define Andean Geographic term for countries located along the Andes mountain range
Define BRICS Term used to describe the world's 5 fastest growing economies
Define Cartel A group which dominates the trade of a specific product or service
Define Emigrate To relocate to a new country for the purpose of employment
Define Latino General term for those with Latin American ancestry from a Spanish-speaking country
Define Narcoterroism A violent extremism associated with the illegal drug trade, specifically relates to cocaine or heroin
Define Naturalization The process by which a citizen of 1 country may become a legal citizen of another country
Define Rural Area located in the country; opposite of urban
Define Trafficking An illegal smuggling of people or products
What was the influence of African slavery on the development of the Americas? Africans were forced to work on sugar cane or coffee plantations because Europeans brought diseases to the New World causing most of the native population to die
What influence did the Spanish and Portuguese have on the language and religion of Latin America? Both Spanish and Portuguese are classified as Romance languages, meaning they derive from the Latin language once used throughout the Roman Empire in Europe.
What are U.S/Cuban relation like today? Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro took some extraordinary steps to normalize bilateral relations, meeting with each other, restoring full diplomatic ties, and easing travel restrictions
