What is the president's main job? To execute, or carry out, the laws passed by Congress
What powers does the Constitution give the president? 1. To veto bills passed in Congress 2. To call Congress into special session 3. To serve as commander in chief of the armed forces 4. To receive leaders of foreign countries
What powers does the Constitution give the president? 5. To make treaties with other countries (with Senate approval) 6. To appoint heads of executive agencies, federal court judges, ambassadors & other top government officials (with Senate approval)
What powers does the Constitution give the president? 7. To pardon or reduce the penalties against people convicted of federal crimes
Why does the president give a "State of the Union" address to Congress? The Constitution requires it
What are the seven roles of the president? 1. Chief Executive 2. Chief Diplomat 3. Commander in Chief 4. Legislative Leader 5. Head of State 6. Economic Leader 7. Party Leader
What is an executive order? A rule or command that has the force of law
In 1948 President Harry S. Truman issued an executive order regarding the armed forces. What did the executive order do? Integrated the armed forces
Who has the final authority to determine whether or not a law is constitutional? The Supreme Court
Who appoints the judges who sit on the Supreme Court? The president
What is a presidential pardon? A declaration of forgiveness and freedom from punishment
What is a reprieve? An order to delay a person's punishment until a higher court can hear the case
What is amnesty? A pardon toward a group of people
As Chief Diplomat, what does the president do? Directs the foreign policy of the U.S.
As Commander in Chief, the president is in charge of what? The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and the Coast Guard
Congress has the power to declare war, but only the president can do what? Order American troops into battle
What is the War Powers Resolution of 1973? The president must notify Congress within 48 when troops are sent into battle. The troops must be brought home in 60 days unless Congress approves otherwise or declares war.
Can the president introduce a bill to Congress? No, only members of Congress can introduce bills for consideration.
When the president has new laws he wants Congress to pass, what does he do? Makes speeches to get support, meets with senators and representatives to get them to introduce and support the bills.
Why do the president and Congress sometimes disagree over what new laws Congress should pass? The president represents the entire country, while members of Congress represent only the people of their states or districts.
What does the president do as Head of State? He aids diplomacy by meeting with foreign leaders such as kings, queens, and prime ministers.
What is the president's main task as Economic Leader of the country? Plan the federal budget.
Why is the federal budget important? It has a great effect on the national economy.
What does the president do as Party Leader? He supports fellow party members who are running for office, and he helps the party raise money.
