| Boycott | to refuse to buy certain goods or services. |
| Repeal | to cancel or undo. |
| Militia | army of citizens who serve as soldiers in an emergency. |
| Refugee | person who flees his or her homeland to seek safety elsewhere. |
| Blockade | shutting off a port by positioning ships to keep people or supplies from moving in or out. |
| Mercenary | soldier who fights merely for pay, often for a foreign country. |
| Traitor | person who betrays his or her country. |
| Preamble | opening statement of a declaration, constitution, or other official document. |
| Ally | nation that works with another nation for a common purpose. |
| Cavalry | troops on horseback. |
| Guerilla | soldier who uses hit and run tactics |
| Siege | military blockade of an enemy town or position in order to force it to surrender |
| Ratify | to approve. |
