| Drought | A LONG period of time with little to no rain which can cause food shortages -To combat droughts in their new homeland between the rivers, Sumerians created an irrigation system. |
| Famine | A time where there is extremely little or no food. -While living in the foothills the mesopotamians had a famine after they exceeded their carrying capacity. |
| Surplus | An extra amount of resources often used for trading -After moving between the two rivers the Mesopotamians had a surplus of farm land. |
| Barter | To trade for what people want/need - The Mesopotamians bartered with each other for food. |
| City-state | An important innovation that allowed people to work together to meet basic needs. - A city-state was created to solve the problem of cities fighting over water. |
| Ziggurat | An object invented to serve as temples to honor the gods and goddesses. -The Sumerians worshiped the gods with a Ziggurat. |
