Term Definition
Globe: A small copy of the earth you can hold in your hands.
Hemisphere: Half of the view of earth. Half a sphere.
Equator Imaginary line that divides the Earth into north and south halves.
Prime Meridian: Imaginary line that divides the Earth into east and west halves.
Longitude: Imaginary half-circles that go north and south around the earth.
Latitude: Imaginary half-circles that go east and west around the earth.
Scale: A tool to help you figure out how far it is in real miles or kilometers from one point on a map to another.
Political Map: A map that shows what humans have created on Earth's surface.
Compass Rose: A fancy design with four large pointers that show the cardinal directions.
Key: A small box on a map that tells what each symbol stands for.
Physical Map: A map that shows the major land forms and water on an area of Earth's surface.
Cardinal Directions: The four main directions on a compass rose.
Intermediate Directions: The directions between the four main directions on a compass rose.
