| Jamestown | Named in honor of King James. The settlement created by the Virginia Company. The men were told to look for gold and establish trade in fish and furs. The settlement was located on a peninsula for protection for Spainish and Indians. |
| John Smith | Became the leader of the Jamestown colony. Without his direction the men would have died. He made them work, to farm and hunt, and create the fort. Without his direction who knows what might have happened to the colony. |
| John Rolfe | Introduced tobacco as the main crop in Jamestown. The seeds were from the West Indies and the plant did so well that it saved the colony for economic disaster. He also married Pocahontas. |

| William Bradford | Leader of the Pilgrims to the Plymouth Colony, in present day Massachusetts. Suggested that they create the Mayflower Compact. |
| Squanto and Samoset | The two native Americans that showed the Pilgrims how and what to plant and how to hunt in the New World. |
| John Winhrop | Leader of the Puritans to the new World. The Massachusetts Bay Colony. Just north of the Pilgrims. Created many harsh rules for the colony and had litte toleration of other ideas and religion. |

| Mayflower Compact | Created by the Pilgrims before they left the ship. 1. Pledged loyalty to England and the laws she laid down. 2. Promised to set up a government when they were settled. First step in a representative government in the new World. |
| Thomas Hooker | Disagreed with Winthrop and did not like the way he was running is colony so he left and establish his own, Connecticut. |
| Roger Williams | Left the Massachusetts Bay Colony because he did not agree with Winthrop. He felt the Native Americans should be paid for their land. And that other religions and beliefs should be tolerated in the New World. Established Rhode Island. |
