General Election Voters select their elected officials.
Direct Primary Election Voters select candidates to run for office in General Election.
Closed Primary Only party members can vote on their party's candidates.
Open Primary Anyone can vote for either party's candidates.
Polarization Division between parties and/or people over controversial topics.
Federalists - Favored a strong central government - Ratify the Constitution - Establish central bank - No need for Bill of Rights
Antifederalists - Favored a weak central government (power in states) - Opposed Constitution - Opposed central bank - Favored Bill of Rights
National Bank Formed by George Washington (Federalist)
Democratic-Republicans Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1800; opposed the Federalists who faded away after the War of 1812
Democrats Formed by Andrew Jackson in 1824
Whigs Formed in 1832 by National Republicans who opposed Andrew Jackson's policies
Republican Party Formed in 1855 by Free Soilers, northern anti-slavery Democrats and Whigs. Nominated Abraham Lincoln for 1861 election.
