| STATE | a political community that occupies a definite territory and has an organized government with the pwer to make and enforce laws without approval from any higher authority |
| NATION | group of people united by bands of race, language, custom, tradition and sometimes religion |
| SOVEREIGNTY | the supreme and absolute authority within territorial boundaries |
| EVOLUTIONARY THEORY | the theory that the state evolved from the family |
| FORCE THEORY | the theory that the state was born of force |
| DIVINE RIGHT | belief that certain people are either descended from gods or chosen by gods to rule |
| SOCIAL CONTRACT | theory by contract, people surrender to the state the power needed to maintain order and the state, in turn, agrees to protect its citzens. Hobbes was one of the 1st to theorize on the social contract. Locke took the social contract a step further |
| UNITARY SYSTEM | government gives all key powers to the national or central government |
| FEDERAL SYSTEM | government divides the powers of government between the national government and state or provincial governments. This is what we have. |
| CONSTITUTION | a plan that provides the rules for government |
| CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT | a government in which a constitution has authority to place clearly recognized limit on the powers of those who govern. |
| PREAMBLE | a statement that sets forth the goals and purposed to be served by the government |
| AUTOCRACY | a system of government in which the power to rule is in the hads of a single individual |
| OLIGARCHY | a system of government in which a small group holds power |
| DEOMOCRACY | government in which the people rule |
| DIRECT DEMOCRACY | people govern themselves by voting on issues individually as citzens |
| REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY | the people elect representatives and give them the responisibility and power to make laws and conduct government |
| FREE MARKET | buyers and sellers were free to make unlimited economic decisions in the marketplace |
