TermDefinition
Polis A Greek city-state. The average polis contained between 5,000 and 10,000 citizens
Acropolis A fortified hill. The farming villages, fields, and orchards were grouped around. On the top of the acropolis stood a temple
Agora A marketplace located at the foot of the acropolis
Citizens Men born in Greece that were not enslaved. Citizens could vote, own property, hold public office, and speak for themselves in a court of law
Sparta A Greek city-state that had the strongest army
Athens A Greek city-state that had the strongest navy
