Civil War Vocab
| Term | Definition |

| Civil War | A war between people of the same country. |
| Union | Group of states in the North that remained unified with the US Government, supported a strong federal government, and wanted to abolish slavery |
| Confederacy | Group of states in the South that formed their own government, supported states’ rights, and wanted to continue slavery |
| Secede | Formally withdraw from a political organization or alliance |
| Emancipate | Set free from legal restrictions or authority |
| Slave Trade | The buying and selling of slaves |
| Abolish/Abolitionist | To outlaw / a person who sought to outlaw slavery |
| Fugitive | A person who is running away from legal authority (“the law”) |
| Revolt/Rebellion | Act of resistance to an established authority |
| Bounty | Reward or payment |
| Casualty | A soldier who is killed, wounded, captured, or missing in battle |
| Total War | A strategy that targets the enemy’s land and people, as well as their military |
| Popular Sovereignty | Idea that government’s power is given by the people, but during the time of the Civil War referred to a proposal to let voters in each territory decide whether to allow slavery |
