Civil War Vocab

TermDefinition
Civil War A war between people of the same country.
Union Group of states in the North that remained unified with the US Government, supported a strong federal government, and wanted to abolish slavery
Confederacy Group of states in the South that formed their own government, supported states’ rights, and wanted to continue slavery
Secede Formally withdraw from a political organization or alliance
Emancipate Set free from legal restrictions or authority
Slave Trade The buying and selling of slaves
Abolish/Abolitionist To outlaw / a person who sought to outlaw slavery
Fugitive A person who is running away from legal authority (“the law”)
Revolt/Rebellion Act of resistance to an established authority
Bounty Reward or payment
Casualty A soldier who is killed, wounded, captured, or missing in battle
Total War A strategy that targets the enemy’s land and people, as well as their military
Popular Sovereignty Idea that government’s power is given by the people, but during the time of the Civil War referred to a proposal to let voters in each territory decide whether to allow slavery
