Muckraker Journalists who investigated and exposed corruption and dishonest practices in their articles and books
Referendum A way that a proposed law or change in an existing law passed by a state legislature is submitted for change or and sent to voters for final approval or rejection
Progressive Movement A group of people demanding progress and reform in society and government, usually members of the middle class.
Negotiation A process involving discussion and bargaining to arrive at an acceptable agreement
Arbitration A process by which different parties involved in a dispute discuss their differences.
Settlement house An urban neighborhood center providing services for immigrants and the poor helping them with education, nursing and finding jobs.
Suffrage The right to vote.
Temperance movement A campaign against alcohol / drinking
Lobbying People who try to influence someone in political office to do what they want.
Initiative A process by which a "certain percentage" of voters can put a proposed law or constitutional amendment on the ballot for approval in a state election.
Commission city government The elected commissioners serve as the city council and the heads/leader of various city departments.
