Global Unit 2 vocab

Bureaucracy An administrative organization with officials and regular procedures
City-State A state with a political and economic control over the surrounding countryside
Cuneiform “Wedge shaped” system of writing developed by the Sumerians
Dynasty A family of rulers whose right to rule is passed on within the family
Hieroglyphics A complex writing system that used both pictures and more abstract forms, used by the ancient Egyptians and Maya
Mandate (of heaven) Authority to rule over a country
Monarchy Government by a sovereign ruler such as a king or queen
Monsoon A seasonal wind pattern in Southern Asia that blows warm, moist air from the southwest during the summer, bringing heavy rains, and cold, dry air from the northeast during the winter
Pharaoh The most common of the various titles for ancient Egyptian monarchs
Polytheistic Believing in many gods
Theocracy Government by divine authority
Cultural diffusion The spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group to another
Subcontinent A large landmass such as India, that is part of a continent but is considered either geographically or politically as an independent entity
