Settling the Northern Colonies

John Calvin Believed that God was all powerful and humans were weak because of "original sin". Believed in predestination and that certain people were "elect"
Visible Saints These were the people that God himself revealed to as elect.They felt like they had to lead rigteous lives to show everyone that they were, indeed, elect.

MA Bay Colony Non- separatist puritans formed the colony with a royal charter.Used the charter as a sort of constitution.The colonists believed that tehy have a covenant with God, an agreement, to build a holy society that would be a mode for humankind.
John Winthrop Became the govenor of the MA Bay Colony.Thought he had a calling from god to lead the new religious experiement.Served as govenor for 19 years.helped MA prosper with fur trading and fishing.
Bible Commonweath Theocratic gov't of MA.Religious leaders had a great influence in the commonweath.
Anne Hutchinson Challenged the puritan orthodoxyshe claimed that a holy life was no sure sign of salvation and that the truly saved didn't need to bother obeying the laws of God or man.This was known as "asantinomianism".
Roger Williams Extreme separatist. Wanted his clergymen to make a break form Church of England. Challengened legality of Bay Colony charter. Denied the authoirty of gov't to regulate religion.
Rhode Island 1st baptist church built in RI. Freedom of religion. 1644: RI secured a charter from parliment.
King Philip's War Formed an alliance with other tribes and mounted attacks on English villages. He was captured and killed. Slowed the westward march of English Settlement in New Engl. Indian #s reduced drastically.
New England Confederacy 4 colonies banded together for defense against foes. Each member colony got two votes. Was pretty much an "exclusive puritan club"
Dominion of New England Aimed at colonial defense. Designed to promote urgently needed efficiency in the administration of the Navigation Laws.
Glorious Revolution Put William III and Mary (protestants) on the throne. Dominion of New England collapsed. Many colonists
