| Columbian Exchange | The transfer of plants, animals, and diseases between the America’s and Europe, Asia, and Africa beginning with the voyages of Columbus |
| Mercantilism | A system in which a government controls all economic activity in a country and its colonies to make the government stronger and richer |
| Balance of trade | The difference in value between what a nation imports and exports over a period of time |
| Subsidies | Grants of monies |
| Capitalism | An economic system in which individuals and private businesses run most industries |
| Joint-Stock Companies | Businesses formed by groups of people who jointly make an investment and share in the profits or losses |
| Plantations | Estates where cash crops such as sugar or tobacco were grown on a large scale |
| Olaudah Equiano | African/American abolitionist; he was an enslaved African who was eventually freed |
| Middle Passage | The name for voyages that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and the West Indies |
| Triangular Trade | Trading network lasting from the 1600’s to the 1800’s that carried goods and enslaved people between Europe, the Americas, and Africa |
| African Diaspora | The dispersal of people of African descent throughout the Americas and Western Europe due to the slave trade |
