TermDefinition
Zionism A movement to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
Religious Group A group of people that share a belief in the same god or gods, with a specific set of rituals and literature.
HAJJ The pilgrimage that Muslims must make to Mecca. (one of the pillars of Islam faith)
Anti-Semitism Hatred of Jews simply because they practice the Jewish faith.
Covenant The agreement between God and the ancient Israelites, in which God promised to protect them if they kept his law and were faithful to him.
Tanakh The collection of Jewish sacred text.
Sunnis The largest denomination of Islam. (90%)
Shia Muslims who follow Muhammad’s closest relative.
Sunnis They believe that you do not have to be a relative of Muhammad to be a leader.
Shia The smaller group of Muslims. (10%)
Ottoman Empire A former Turkish empire that spanned over 600 years of empire building; Collapsed after World War I.
Saddam Hussein Leader of Iraq from 1979 until his execution in 2006; wanted control of Kuwait’s oil fields and access to the Persian Gulf
Terrorism The use of violence against a group of people or government in hopes of achieving a political goal.
Diaspora The movement, migration, or scattering of people away from an established or ancestral homeland
