Religious Group | A group of people that share a belief in the same god or gods, with a specific set of rituals and literature. |
HAJJ | The pilgrimage that Muslims must make to Mecca. (one of the pillars of Islam faith) |
Anti-Semitism | Hatred of Jews simply because they practice the Jewish faith. |
Covenant | The agreement between God and the ancient Israelites, in which God promised to protect them if they kept his law and were faithful to him. |
Tanakh | The collection of Jewish sacred text. |
Sunnis | The largest denomination of Islam. (90%) |
Shia | Muslims who follow Muhammad’s closest relative. |
Sunnis | They believe that you do not have to be a relative of Muhammad to be a leader. |
Shia | The smaller group of Muslims. (10%) |
Ottoman Empire | A former Turkish empire that spanned over 600 years of empire building; Collapsed after World War I. |
Saddam Hussein | Leader of Iraq from 1979 until his execution in 2006; wanted control of Kuwait’s oil fields and access to the Persian Gulf |
Terrorism | The use of violence against a group of people or government in hopes of achieving a political goal. |
Diaspora | The movement, migration, or scattering of people away from an established or ancestral homeland |
