William Bucknell and the Santa Fe Trail One of the first Americans in New Mexico. Used the Santa Fe Trail to sell his goods in New Mexico.
California Rich farmland, wonderful harbors, and give America a stopping ground for foreign boats and goods.
ranchos Large ranches in California owned by Mexicans.
Rancheros The people who work the ranchos.
Rio Grande or the Nueces River? The border dispute that started the Mexican American War. Generalo Zachary Taylor marched American forces into the disputed area between the two starting the war.
General Zachary Taylor Led American troops in the Mexican-American War. Becomes a war hero after this.
Polks War Plan 1. Capture the towns of Matamoros and Monterrey. 2. Sieze New Mexico and California. 3. Capture the capital of Mexico City.
Conquering California Marched into the area and conquered it with on 1,500 troops. The Mexicans resisted and was the easiest take over in American history.
Treaty of Guadalup Hildago Mexico gives up all claims to Texas and border is the Rio Grande. Mexican Cession, gave up California and New Mexico in return for $15 million dollars.

Calfornia Gold Rush Gold was found at Sutters Mill in California in 1848. New traveled west and then 80,000 settlers came in 1849 to strike it rich!
49ers The miners that came to look for gold in 1849.
boomtowns Towns and communities that grew almost overnight, usually around a place where gold had been found.
vigilantes People who took the law into their own hands to try and keep the peace in boomtowns.
Mormons A religion that was started by John Smith. Always had to move west because they faced much persecution from people in the east. Finally settled in Utah.

Brigham Young Leader of the Mormons after John Smith died.
James K. Polk President of the United States. Firm believer in Manifest Destiny. Encouraged war with Mexico and expanding Americas borders.
Tejanos Mexicans who claim Texas as their home.
Empresarios A person who arranged for settlement of land in Texas during the 1800's.
Stephen F. Austin Led the original American settlers into Texas, called the Old Three Hundred. Played a crucial role in Texas fighting for independence from Mexican control.

decree An offical order.
General Santa Anna President of Mexico. Leader of Mexican forces against the Texans.
Gonzales First battle. Texans were able to hold their ground, and the Mexicans never did get those canons.
Alamo Texans barricaded in a Spanish Mission. Attacked for twelve days by the Mexican Amry. Bought the Texans time as they were creating the Declaration of Independence of Texas.
Sam Houston Leader of Texan army, will later become President of Texas.
Goliad Mexican army massacres Texan soldiers after they had surrendered. Angered the Texans.
San Jancinto The last battle where the Texans cried "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!" They won their independence after this battle.
