| Continental Army | the American army during the American Revolution. |
| George Washington | 1st President of the United States; commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution (1732-1799). |
| Battle of Bunker Hill | the first important battle of the American War of Independence (1775) which was fought at Breed's Hill. |
| Impose | to force or inflict something on someone else. |
| Independence | being free of the control of some other person, country or entity. |
| Policies | a line of argument rationalizing the course of action of a government. |
| Olive Branch Petition | effort of American colonists to make peace with the British. |
| Thomas Paine | American Revolutionary leader and pamphleteer, who supported the American colonist's fight for independence and supported the French Revolution (1737-1809). |
| Common Sense | a sound practical judgement about everyday manners. |
| Declaration of Independence | the document recording the proclamation of the second Continental Congress (4 July 1776) asserting the independence of the Colonies from Great Britain. |
| Thomas Jefferson | 3rd President of the United States; chief drafter of the Declaration of Independence; made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and sent out the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore it (1743-1826). |

| Fundamental rights | basic human freedoms that every citizen has the right to enjoy for a proper and harmonious development of personality. |

| Patrick Henry | a leader of the American Revolution and a famous orator who spoke out against British rule of the American colonies (1736-1799). |
