continent The largest area of land on Earth

geography The study of the Earth, it's physical features, and the way living things use the Earth.
hemisphere half of a sphere
distortion Change in shape and size of an object (like a globe to a map)
pole The areas at the top and bottom of the globe
equator The imaginary line that divides the earth into northern and southern parts
Prime Meridian The imaginary line that divides the Earth into eastern and western parts
Why is a globe a good model of the Earth? because it is the same shape as the Earth and there is no distortion
Why is a globe NOT a good model of the Earth? because you can only see one part at a time, there is not much detail, and it is hard to carry around.
Why is a map a good model of the Earth? because it is flat and easy to carry, it can show part of the Earth, and it can show a lot more detail.
Why is a map NOT a good model of the Earth? because places can be distorted
Why have geographers named five oceans on Earth? because they gave different names to sections of water separated by land
Why do maps need a map scale? to show how far away a place is in real life
What is a linear scale? it is made up of numbers and shows the scale on a map
What is a word scale? it is made up of words that tell the scale on a map
