| longitude | distance east or west of the prime meridian, imaginary lines that run north to south |
| latitude | distance north or south of the equator, imaginary lines that run east to west |
| meridian | another name for longitude lines |
| prime meridian | an imaginary line dividing the earth into eastern and western hemispheres |
| intermediate directions | NW, SW, NE, SE |
| cardinal directions | the directions north, south, east, west |
| scale | a unit of measure on a map that is used to represent distances on earth |
| compass rose | a drawing on a map that shows direction |
| parallel | another name for latitude lines |
| symbol | anything that stands for something else |
| key / legend | a list that tells you what symbols stand for |
| locator | a small map that shows where the subject area of a main map is located |
| global grid | the pattern of crossed lines formed when latitude and longitude are used together |
