| Emancipation Proclamation | A order by President Lincoln that freed slaves in areas rebelling the union on January 1, 1863. |
| Total War | A strategy that armies used to fight by destroying the components ability to fight by attacking civilians and others. |
| War of Attrition | Union General Grant's war strategy of fighting til the components ran out of the will to fight, supplies, and men. |
| Amnesty | An official pardon issued by the government. |
| Black Codes | Laws that limited former slaves freedom in the wouth during reconstruction. |
| Carpetbaggers | Northern Republicans who moved to South during reconstruction. |
| Sharecroppers | Southern Farms used this after the civil war which farmers worked on someone else's land in return of supplies or a small share of crops. |
| Compromise of 1877 | An agreement that settled the election of 1876; democrats excepted Hayes if troops in South were removed. |
| Reconstruction acts | Divided former confederate states to turn them into military zones. |
