Gilded Age

TermDefinition
Poll tax A tax levied on every adult, without reference to income or resources
Literacy test Southern state legislature employed literacy test as part of the voter registration process starting in the late 19th century.
Grandfather clause A cause exempting certain classes of people or things from the requirements of a piece of legislation affecting their previous rights, privileges, or practices
Spoils system The practice of a successful political party giving public office to its officers
Civil service A person so employed in the public sector employed for a government department or agency.
Gold standard Monetary system where a country’s currency or paper money has a value directly linked to gold.
Populist party The people’s party was an agrarian populist political party in the United States
Las gorras blancas A group active in the New Mexico territory and American southwest in the late 1880’s and early 1890’s
