Geography Review

TermDefinition
Geography the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments
Human Geography The study of how people interact with their environment
Physical Geography The study of the natural features on Earth (mountains, rivers, plains, oceans)
Continent a very large landmass on the Earth
Oceans Bodies of saltwater that cover most of the Earth’s surface
Cardinal Directions The four main points of a compass. (North, South, East, and West)
Intermediate Directions Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
Longitude lines running vertically around the Earth that measure East and West of the Prime Meridian
Latitude lines running horizontally across Earth that measure North and South of the Equator
Equator 0 degrees Latitude
Prime Meridian 0 degrees Longitude
Five Themes of Geography Movement, Region, Human Environment Interaction, Location, Place
Movement This theme of geography describes how goods, people, ideas, and information move from one place to another
Region This theme of geography describes how areas are grouped together by a common characteristic or feature
Human Environment Interaction This theme of geography describes how people interact with the environment
Location This theme of geography describes where places are located
Place This theme of geography describes what makes an area special or unique
Transportation moving people, goods, or other objects
Communication moving ideas and information
Absolute Location Exact position on the Earth (Longitude & Latitude)
Relative Location Where a place is in relation to another place
Human characteristics What the people are like (language, jobs, food, religion)
Physical characteristics What the environment looks like (mountains, lakes, forests, oceans)
