Westward Expansion

| Exodusters | African Americans who migrated west from Mississippi to Kansas. |
| Transcontinental Railroad | A railroad that linked from Omaha, Nebraska to Sacremento California to transport goods. |
| Pony Express | Mail delivery by horse riders (lasted for one year) |
| Gold Rush | When everybody started migrating to the West to find gold |
| Telegraph | A faster way to send mail than the Pony Express by using electricity |
| Prospecters | People who would mine for gold in the river |
| Samuel Morse Code | A code for the telegraph |
| Homestead Act | Abraham Lincoln declared that you could move out west and have one hundred sixty acres of land for just $18.00! You had to farm it for five years, and if you did it successfully, you owned that land. |
| Sodbuster | A farmer who plowed land (usually lived in a house under a hill for protection of different weather conditions) |
| Homesteader | (same thing as Homestead Act) |
| Pioneer | An early explorer or settler, usually out in the American West. |
