It disbanded Southern State governments that WOULDN'T ratify the 14TH Amendment; Southern states had to write new state CONSTITUTIONS including the 14th Amendment; Confederates could NOT vote or hold office; & African Americans guaranteed right to VOTE
What was the Freedmen's Bureau, who did it help and what did it provide? It was a GOVERNMENT AGENCY that helped FORMER SLAVES and POOR WHITES and provided them with FOOD, CLOTHING, JOBS FOR FREEDMEN, MEDICAL CARE FOR 1 MILLION, SCHOOLS FOR FREEDMEN, and CREATED COLLEGES.
When was President Lincoln assassinated, who shot him and who became America's new President? Lincoln was assassinated on APRIL 14, 1865 in Ford's Theatre by JOHN WILKES BOOTH - ANDREW JOHNSON became President.
What did the 13th Amendment do? It BANNED SLAVERY throughout the nation.
What were black codes? LAWS that SEVERELY LIMITED THE RIGHTS OF FREEDMEN.
What did the Civil Rights Act of 1866 do? It GAVE AFRICAN AMERICANS CITIZENSHIP.
What did the 14th Amendment do? ALL PEOPLE BORN IN THE US WERE GUARANTEED EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAWS, FORBADE STATES TO DEPRIVE ANY PERSON OF LIFE, LIBERTY OR PROPERTY WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF THE LAW.
What did the 15th Amendment do? It FORBADE ANY STATE TO DENY ANY CITIZEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE BECAUSE OF RACE, COLOR, OR PREVIOUS CONDITION OF SERVITUDE
What was a Scalawag? A WHITE SOUTHERN REPUBLICAN
What was a carpetbagger? A NORTHERNER WHO MOVED TO THE SOUTH AFTER THE CIVIL WAR for many reasons.
Could and did African Americans hold office? YES!
Who was the KKK and what was their purpose? The KU KLUX KLAN, through FEAR, worked to KEEP AFRICAN AMERICANS and WHITE REPUBLICANS OUT OF OFFICE
What was sharecropping? The RENTING AND FARMING A PLOT OF OWNED LAND, the owners providing SEED, FERTILIZER, and TOOLS in return for a SHARE OF THE CROP at harvest time - Freedmen and their families usually took hold of this job to make money
What year marks the end of Reconstruction when all of the Federal troops in the South were removed? 1877
What were Poll Taxes? The FEE you had to pay to VOTE
What were Literacy Tests? A TEST that required voters to READ and EXPLAIN A PART OF THE CONSTITUTION
What was the Grandfather Clauses? If a voter’s FATHER OR GRANDFATHER had been ELIGIBLE to VOTE on JANUARY 1, 1867 the voter DID NOT have to take a literacy test
What were Jim Crow Laws? SEGREGATION, LEGAL SEPARATION of RACES
What was the Plessy V. Ferguson? Supreme Court ruled SEGREGATION was LEGAL as long as facilities for BLACKS and WHITES were EQUAL
What is amnesty? GOVERNMENT PARDON.
What is impeaching? To BRING CHARGES of SERIOUS WRONGDOING against a PUBLIC OFFICIAL
What is segregation? LEGAL SEPARATION of people based on RACE, ETHNIC, or other differences.
Were Literacy Tests fair to the majority of American Americans who didn't know how to read? NO!
Was the Grandfather Clauses fair to African Americans whose ancestors weren't able to vote? NO!
Did people actually work to make the facilities equal to blacks and whites, according to the Plessy V. Ferguson act? NO!
Who was a Freedmen? MEN and WOMEN who had ONCE BEEN SLAVES.
Who proposed the Ten Percent Plan and what were the conditions to the former Confederate States to rejoin the Union? PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN in 1863; HAVING 10% OF SOUTHERN VOTERS TAKE AN OATH OF LOYALTY and HAVING THE ABOLISHMENT OF SLAVERY.
Who proposed the Wade-Davis Bill and what were the conditions to the former Confederate States to rejoin the Union? REPUBLICANS in CONGRESS in 1864; the MAJORITY OF WHITE MEN had to SWEAR LOYALTY to the US and FORMER CONFEDERATES could NOT VOTE or HOLD OFFICE.
Who proposed the Johnson Plan and what were the conditions to the former Confederate States to rejoin the Union? PRESIDENT ANDREW JOHNSON in 1865; MAJORITY OF WHITE MEN had to SWEAR LOYALTY to the US, the 13TH AMENDMENT had to be PASSED, but FORMER CONFEDERATES COULD VOTE AND HOLD OFFICE.
