Capitalization Rules

Basic Rules to know for capitalization

TermDefinition
Rule 1 capitalize the first word of every sentence
Rule 2 capitalize the names of specific things and places
Rule 3 capitalize days of the week, months of the year, and holidays. Do not capitalize the names of seasons.
Rule 4 capitalize the names of all languages, nationalities, races, religions, deities, and sacred terms.
Rule 5 capitalize the first word and every important word in a title. Except when they start a title, do not capitalize articles, prepositions, or short connecting words.
Rule 6 capitalize the first word of a direct quotation.
Rule 7 capitalize historical events, periods, and documents.
Rule 8 capitalize the words "north, south, east, and west" when they are used as places rather than as directions.
Rule 9 capitalize people's names
Rule 10 capitalize brand names
