TermDefinition
Literacy Rate The percentage of adults who can read and write.
Nomad A member of a people or tribe that has no permanent residence but moves about from place to place.
Monarchy A government headed by a King or a Queen.
Theocracy A government controlled by religious leaders.
Distribution The way that something is divided or spread out.
Scarcity When there are not enough resources to produce everything people need and want.
Fertile Crescent The arable region in the Middle East where the civilizations of the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin began.
Desalination The process of taking salt out of seawater and using it for drinking water.
Parliamentary Government A form of democracy where the leader IS a member of the legislature.
Presidential Government A form of democracy where the leader is NOT a member of the legislature.
Arabs A group of people originally from the Arabian Peninsula. Most (not all) are Muslims.
Persians A group of people who trace their history back to ancient Persian Empire.
Arabs It is the largest ethnic group in the Middle East.
Persians Most live in Iran and speak Farsi.
Parliamentary Government Leader is chosen by the legislature.
Presidential Government Leader is chosen by the people.
Fertile Crescent Area around the Tigris and Euphrates river.
Qu’ran/Koran The sacred book of the Islamic faith.
Ethnic Group A group of people that share a common heritage, race, language, customs, beliefs, and sometimes religion.
Private Enterprise People running their own businesses
