| black codes | laws made by south before the civil war to keep African Americans from having rights. |
| Reconstruction act of 1867 | Gave African Americans men the right to vote. No former Confederate could hold office or vote. Made by the US congress. |
| carpetbagger | People who came from the North to start businesses in the South. |
| Scaleawags | Southerners who supported Reconstruction. |
| 14th Amendment | Gave African Americans citizenship and the Right to equal protection under the law. |
| 15th Adenment | Gave ALL male citizens the right to vote by Congress. |
| impechment | Charges of wrongdoing by an elected officials by Congress. |
| Jim Crow Laws | Laws passed after Reconstruction that enforced segregation. |
