GA Regions & Rivers

TermDefinition
Appalachian Plateau The smallest region in Georgia and is located in the northwestern corner of Georgia. This region is a part of a mountain chain that reaches all the way to Canada and is made up of many mountains and plateaus.
Ridge and Valley A region located in the northern part of Georgia. It is full of ridges, valleys, and trees.
Blue Ridge Mountains A region located in the northeastern part of Georgia. It is made up of the highest mountains in Georgia including Brasstown Bald (the highest peak in Georgia). This region also has the biggest rivers in Georgia.
Piedmont The majority of people who live in Georgia live in this region, including YOU. Georgia's capital, Atlanta, is located in this region.
Coastal Plain A region covering the southern part of Georgia. It is Georgia's largest region and is mostly flat. You can find Georgia's beaches in this region.
region An area in a part of the world that is determined by its' features or landforms. Georgia has 5 of them.
landform A feature of the Earth's surface.
island A piece of land that is surrounded by water
valley A low area of land that lies between mountains or hills.
plateau A large, flat area of land that is higher and raised up above the surrounding area.
river A large, flowing body of water that usually empties into a sea or ocean.
mountain A part of the Earth that has been pushed up to form a high peak.
coast A part of land near the sea. In other words, the edge of the land.
plain Large areas of flat land with few to no trees.
ridge A continuous chain of mountain.
Chattahoochee River This river begins in the Blue Ridge Mountain region, running south along the border of Georgia and Alabama.
Savannah River This river begins in the Blue Ridge Mountain region. running south along the border of Georgia and South Carolina before reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
Flint River This river begins in the Piedmont region and runs south in Georgia before meeting the Chattahoochee River in Lake
compass rose A tool used to measure direction (North, East, South, West, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest).
