| Sugar Act | a law passed by the parliament in 1764 that placed a tax on sugar, molasses and other products shipped to the colonies; also called harsh punishment of smugglers |
| Stamp Act | a 1765 law passes by Parliament that required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing the tax ha been payed |
| Patrick Henry | member of Virginia's House of Burgesses who wanted the Stamp Act to be removed |
| boycott | a refusal to buy certain items |
| Sons of Liberty | a group of colonists who formed a secret society to opose British colonies at the time of the American Revolution |
