What disease is caused by dermatophytes ? Dermatophytes cause tinea or ringworm infection of various body sites
What are the most common body sites affected by Dermatophytes? The most common body sites affected by tinea are facial hair, the scalp, body trunk, extremities, groin, hands, feet, and nails.
What dematophyte causes ringworm in dogs and cats and how is it distinguished from other species? It is caused by Microsporum canis and is identified by it's rough, thick walled, spindle shaped macroconidia with a crooked tip.
What are the three Trichophyton species and how are they differentiated? The three species are Trichophyton mentagrophytes (Grows on Trichophyton agar #1 and #4, Urea +, Hair Test +), Trichophyton rubrum (Grows on Tryptophyton agar #1 and #4, Urea -, Hair Test -), and Trichophyton tonsurans (Grows only on T. agar #4)
What are the three genus of superficial mycoses and what are their affects? Tinea versicolor (scaly red/brown irregular patches on skin) caused by Malassezia furfur, Tinea nigra (non-scaly brown patches on palms) caused by Exophilia and Wangiella, and fungal infection of the hair shafts caused by Piedra
