TermDefinition
democracy A form of government in which the people rule by making decisions themselves and by electing leaders to make decisions for them.
federal system A system of government in which the power to govern is shared by the national and state governments.
legislative branch The part of the government that makes the laws.
executive branch A part of government that suggests laws and makes sure that laws are carried out.
judicial branch The part of the government that makes sure the laws agree with the Constitution.
appoint To choose
bill A plan for a new law.
district An area of the state set apart by the government for a special purpose.
veto To reject.
jury A group of citizens who decide whether a law has been broken.
appeal To ask a higher court to change a lower court's decision.
county A part of a state, usually larger than a city, which has its own government.
municipal Relating to government at the town or city level.
citizenship Recognition as a legal member of a country
volunteer A person who offers to do something without pay; to work or give time without pay.
