Amateur A person who does something without payment; not a professional
Civil War A war between different political groups within the same country
Banned Not allowed to participate or attend
Refugee A person who flees for refuge or safety, especially to a foreign country, as in time of political upheaval, war, etc.
Contestant A person who plays and participates in a game
Immigration To come to a country of which one is not a native, usually for permanent residence.
Host The country that holds the Games
Rebel Soldiers Fighters that refuse allegiance to, resist, or rise up in arms against the government or ruler of their country
Nationality The country a person is from
Oath A promise
Preliminaries Tryouts before being able to participate as an athlete in the Olympic Games
Qualify Achieve the minimum requirement
Representative One person who speaks or acts on behalf of a team or group
Sponsor A company that gives an athlete financial support in exchange for promoting clothes or other products
Sportsmanship Fairness and honesty in sports
Stamina Having energy for a long time
Standings A record of athletes’ performances
