Latin America History and Current Events

Hacienda Spanish agricultural plantations throughout Latin America during the colonial period
Columbian Exchange The movement of goods, ideas, diseases and cultures between Europe (Old World) and its colonies in North and South America (New World) during the European Age of Exploration.
Transatlantic Slave Trade the enslavement and forced transportation of 12-15 million black Africans to the Americas between the 15th and 19th centuries
Triangular Trade a 3-way system of exchange of slaves, cash crops, and manufactured goods between West Africa, Caribbean or American colonies, and Europe from the late 16th to early 19th centuries. 
Middle Passage the second stage of the triangular trade in which millions of Africans were shipped to the New World as part of the Atlantic slave trade.
Indigenous native to a region
Mestizo a person of mixed Spanish and Native American ancestry, children of mixed race - Spanish & Indigenous people
Mulatto a person of mixed white and black ancestry, especially a person with one white and one black parent
Communism political and economic system in which private ownership is largely forbidden and the government owns all property and makes all economic decisions
Coup- sudden violent overthrow of a government often by the military.
Fidel Castro Cuban revolutionary who overthrew a corrupt government in 1959 but soon became a Communist dictator.
Raul Castro Fidel Castro’s brother; Cuban President Raul Castro succeeded Fidel Castro in 2008. Under Fidel, Raul was the head of Cuba’s armed forces and served as defense minister.
Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 Cold War event wherein the Soviet Union, with the agreement of the Castro regime, placed intermediate and medium-range ballistic missiles on the island of Cuba which were capable of striking the United States
Embargo prohibition of trade with a certain country
Narco-terrorism violent extremism associated with the illegal drug trade
Cartel a group which dominates the trade of a specific product or service
Trafficking the illegal smuggling of people or products
Emigrate to relocate to a new country for the purpose of employment
Naturalization the process by which a citizen of one country may become a legal citizen of another country
Rural an area that is largely countryside; this is in contrast to an urban (i.e., city) area
Urban an area that is largely city; this is in contrast to an rural (i.e. countryside) area
