| Consul | one of the two annually elected chief magistrates who jointly ruled the republic. |
| Gladiator | men who fought against one another or against large animals as a form of entertainment for others. |
| Jury | a panel of ordinary people who, in many democracies, take part in cases that are brought to trial. |
| Republic | a form of government in which people elect leaders, called representatives, to stand in for them. |
| Aqueduct | an artificial waterway designed to carry water from one place to another. |
| Pax Romana | a time of peace in Rome. Latin for “Roman Peace.” |
| Taxes | A tax is a required payment of money to the government at regular intervals. |
