Why did Americans elect Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR) as President in 1932? Because he gave them new hope during the Depression
Who was President of the United States when the Great Depression began in the 1920s? Herbert Hoover
What did President Herbert Hoover believe about the government's role in the economy? Hoover believed that the federal government should not play a big role in the economy. He thought the economy would improve on its own, as it had in the past.
What is hydroelectricity? Electricity produced by water
Who ran against Herbert Hoover for President in the 1932 Presidential election? Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR)
What was Roosevelt’s election slogan? “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.”
What did Roosevelt promise the Americans he would do if he was elected President? To create government programs to help people who were suffering and in need
What famous sentence did Roosevelt say when he became President? “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
What did Roosevelt do to keep his campaign promise? He created the New Deal
What was the New Deal? A variety of government programs. Some programs gave food and shelter to those in need. Others put people back to work.
Who was Eleanor Roosevelt? The wife of FDR. She spoke out for the rights of workers, African Americans, and children. She started the National Youth Administration which created jobs for young people.
What was the CCC? The Civilian Conservation Corps and its goal was to create jobs and conserve, or protect, the natural environment. Its workers planted trees, cleared hiking trails, and completed other conservation projects.
What was the TVA? The TVA was the Tennessee Valley Authority. THE TVA built dams on the Tennessee River. The dams created hydroelectricity for rural areas in the Southeast.
What was the WPA? The WPA was the Works Progress Administration. It hired people to build streets, parks, libraries, and schools. It paid artists to paint murals on public buildings and hired authors to write books about places in the United States.
What is one New Deal program that is still in effect today? Social Security
What was the Social Security Act? To provide money to people over the age of 65 and to help those who had disabilities and cannot work
What is a regulation? A rule or law
What is minimum wage? The lowest amount of money most workers can be paid
What is interest rate? The amount people pay to borrow money
