When did Theodore Roosevelt become President and how long was he President? Theodore Roosevelt became President in 1901 and served as President until 1909.
Why did Theodore Roosevelt want to build a canal? Theodore Roosevelt wanted to build a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans because he believed that the canal would save ships the long, expensive trip around the southern tip of South America when traveling from the east coast of the United States to the west coast.
What is an isthmus? An isthmus is a narrow strip of land that links two larger pieces of land. It has water on both sides.
What obstacles did Roosevelt face when trying to get the land to build the Panama Canal? Roosevelt tried to buy land for the canal from Colombia but they would not sell it. He decided to help the people of Panama win their independence from Colombia and the new leaders of Panama agreed to let the United States build the Canal.
How long did it take to build the Panama Canal? 10 years
What were some of the hardships and obstacles faced when building the Panama Canal? Some of the hardships and obstacles that President Theodore Roosevelt faced when trying to build the Panama Canal were problems with machinery, workers getting sick from the climate and the insects, and dangerous working conditions
