| Nationalism | strong feeling of loyalty to the country where one was born or raised. Based on people who share common heritage, language, and customs |
| League of Nations | an international organization to promote world peace and cooperation that the Treaty of Versailles created; ended 1946 |
| reparation | compensation in money, material, labor, etc. payable by a defeated country to another country or to an individual for loss suffered during of as a result of war. The Treaty of Versailles ordered Germany to pay reparation to France |
| Ration | a fixed amount of an item(s) allowed to each person during a time of shortage, as in wartime |
| Attrition | the action of gradually reducing the strength or effectiveness of someone or something through sustained attack or pressure |
| Stalemate | position or situation in which no action can be taken or progress made |
| Effect | the result or consequence of something |
| No Man's Land | an area between opposing armies, over which no control has been established |
| Propaganda | information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement |
| Armistice | Temporary suspension of hostilities |
| Lusitania | British ocean liner (passenger ship) that a German submarine sank in World War I, the event pulled USA into WWI |
| Treaty of Versailles | Peace treaty that ended WWI |
| Trench Warfare | combat in which each side occupies a system of protective trenches |
| Isolation | Separation from others |
| Neutral | not taking sides in a conflict |
| Assassination | To kill suddenly or secretively |
| Assimilation | adapting or adjusting to the culture of a group or nation |
| Cultural Superiority | the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic group or culture |
| Triple Entente | Alliance between Great Britain, France and Russia before WW |
| Triple Alliance | Alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy before WWI |
| Unification | the process of bringing together as one |
| Alliance | a union formed for common benefits, especially between countries or organizations |
| Militarism | belief in increasing a nation’s influence by building its military strength |
