What is nominating conventions? Where party members choose the party's candidate.
1820 and 1830 time period in democracy is known as.... The Jacksonian Democracy
Who was President Jackson's vice president, who resigned due to the nullification crisis? John C. Calhon
Jackson's supporters saw his victory as a win for? The common people
Who were President Jackson's group of trusted advisers? The Kitchen Cabinet
When was the Tariff of Abomination put through? Who hated it and why? Congress passed the act before Jackson took office. Southerners disliked the high tariff because only Northerners would benefit.
What is the States Rights doctrine? Stated since states formed the national government, state power should be greater federal power.
What is the Nullification Crisis? Led by John C. Calhon that said that states can ignore federal laws if they felt it was unconstitutional.
Why did Jackson oppose the 2nd charter for the bank? He felt Congress abused it's power. The states should have the power to control the banking system.
What is the McCulloch v. Maryland? Supreme court ruled the bank was constitutional when Maryland tried to pass a tax on it's bank. The bank refused to pay the tax.
What party was made to oppose President Jackson? The Whig party. Was named that after an English political party that opposed the monarchy, to make a point Jackson abused his power like a king.
A severe economic depression due to Jackson's unsuccessful banking policies? Panic of 1837, people blamed this on Van Buren.
What did Jackson do to show he was serious about killing the bank's charter? He ordered Americans to use only gold or silver-instead of paper bank notes- to buy government owned land.
Why did the Indian Removal Act happen? What is the act? American settlers wanted to expand settlements. Congress passed the Act in 1830 that authorized the removal of Native Americans who lived east of Mississippi river to lands in west.
U.S land that is now Oklahoma, where Native Americans were planned to move there. Indian Territory
Why did 1/4 of the Choctaw being moved die? They moved during a bad winter trip. Federal officers didn't have enough supplies, so the Choctaw died of starvation, disease, or cold
What did Sequoya do? He created a writing system for Cherokee syllables
How did Cherokee believe they wouldn't be removed? They set up schools were the children learned to read and write English, and created a bi cameral council and a court system. They believed taking up on the American ways would prevent them from moving.
What was discovered on Cherokee land in Georgia that made Georgia want to remove them? Gold
What is the Worcester v. Georgia? It ruled that the Cherokee nation was a distant community where Georgia's laws couldn't reach them
What is the trail of tears? It is a 800 mile forced march the Cherokee did. 18,000 died in this march.
John Jacob Astor was? Created the largest fur businesses, the American Fur company
Mountain Men are? Fur traders and trappers, they trapped the animals on their own and had to survive many hardships.
The Oregon trail was? 2,000 mile long which stretched from places such as Missouri, or council bluffs, Iowa, west into Oregon Country.
The Santa Fe trail was different from the Oregon. But what is it? It led from Independence, Missouri, to Sante Fe, and New Mexico.

Who led a rebellion of 80,000 poor Inians and Spanish people? Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla
Empresarios are? Agents to bring settlers to Texas.
Am abandoned mission near San Antonio that became an important battle site in the Texas Revolution. Alamo
The battle of San jacinto. Alamo forced Santa Anna to give Texas thier freedom.
What is manifest destiny? To settle in land all the way to the Pacific Ocean in order to spread Democracy.
Vaqueros are? Cowboys that managed the large herds of cattle & sheep.
The Bear Flag revolt was important because? Americans Declared California as independent.
Treaty of guadalupe hidalgo was in February 1848. What did it do? It officially ended the Mexican war and forced Mexico to turn over much of it's northern territory to u.S.
A purchase the U.S. government paid Mexico 10 million for. In exchange U.S received southern parts of what are now Arizona and New Mexico. Gadsden Purchase.
Forty niners were? Gold seeking migrants to California.
