Westward Expansion

| Rendezvou | French word meaning a meeting where fur traders would exchange furs for supplies |

| Siege | An attack in which one force surrounds a city or force |

| Polygamy | The practice of having more than one wife at a time |
| Vigilantes | Self-appointed law enforcers |
| Popular sovereignty | The idea that people in a territory or state would vote directly on issues, rather than having their elected representatives decide |

| Propaganda | False or misleading information that is spread to further a cause |
| Civil war | A war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country |
| Dred scott | A slave who sued in court for his freedom arguing that he was free because he had lived where slavery was illegal (he lost) |
| John brown | Abolitionist who attacked a US armory to seize guns to give to slaves in a revolt against slavery (he was hung) |
